PROTEIN HOT CHOCOLATE

Something about the cold winter snow makes just about everyone want to cozy up with a mug of warm hot chocolate. If you are anything like me, you may prefer to eat your calories rather than drink them, but this protein hot chocolate may change your mind.

My favorite thing about this protein hot chocolate is that it is a sweet treat that is high in protein and a great source of important vitamins and minerals. In just a mug of this hot protein drink, you are getting 25 grams of protein, and good sources of calcium, vitamin D, riboflavin, phosphorus, potassium, manganese and vitamin B12. If you decide to substitute an alternative fortified milk in this recipe, you are most likely getting a good source of vitamin D, vitamin E, and calcium.

Tips for making a hot protein shake

  • Blending: If you are in a rush, or don’t want to waste time blending, this is optional. But I hate to say, blending is one of my favorite parts of this recipe. Blending makes this protein hot chocolate frothy, and more like normal hot chocolate. If you aren’t going to blend, I recommend shaking the milk and protein powder up in a blender bottle before heating up. DO NOT just pour the milk and protein powder in a mug and stir. This will give you a thick, inconsistent, and chunky hot protein shake.

  • Cream: I recommend drinking this hot protein drink without cream. It you want to add it, I recommend just 1 tbsp of whipped cream. That should be enough to give it a creamy taste, with just a few extra calories.

  • Toppings: Feel free to top this hot chocolate with your choice of topping - a shake of cinnamon, a couple of chocolate chips or a touch of peppermint candy cane. This is a quick way to add a little extra flavor.

Substitutes for this protein hot chocolate

  • Milk: Please feel free to substitute milk for your preferred type of milk. Whether you are lactose intolerant, or just prefer soy milk, oat milk, or almond milk, feel free to substitute. There are many benefits of both cow’s milk and other types of milk. Milk is high in both calcium and vitamin D, two nutrients that are usually low in the American diet. Milk also has a good type of fat in it that is essential in a good diet. Soy, almond or oat milk is a great alternative though. These types of milk are fortified with many vitamins and minerals that are necessary in the diet.

  • Protein powder: You can substitute vanilla protein powder in this protein hot chocolate for a different protein powder flavor or collagen powder. Chocolate protein powder will work just as good, but if you still add the cinnamon it will taste more like a Mexican hot chocolate. Collagen powder will also work, but you will want to make sure you use a powder that is either a chocolate or vanilla flavor - not plain.

  • Cinnamon: If you hate cinnamon, feel free to make it optional. especially if you are making this protein powder hot chocolate with chocolate protein powder. I would highly recommend adding it to your vanilla hot protein drink, it totally makes it!
